The objective of this course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of linguistic pragmatics. Pragmatics is an area of linguistics which studies how language is used to convey meaning in a variety of communicative situations. At the end of this course, students will have a better understanding of how people use different strategies in order to communicate with each other.
授業概要
This course will give an overview of key concepts in pragmatics. It will introduce students to examples of pragmatic meaning at the sentence level (entailment and presupposition) and pragmatic meaning in conversation (the cooperative principle, speech acts, politeness, conversation analysis). Students will also read and lead discussions on articles relating to pragmatics in everyday society. This will further improve students' ability to read and understand research papers in English.
