By the completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the organization of an academic article on phonetics and phonology. 2. Compare and contrast the sound systems of English and Japanese. 3. Describe the connection between English sounds and spelling. 4. Design exercises and activities by using phonics rules.
授業概要
This course is designed for students who are interested in phonetics and phonology. In addition to familiarizing students with the basic concepts and terminology of these fields, we will read a number of articles on various topics and study the organization of academic articles. The first half of the semester focuses on the comparison of the sound systems between English and Japanese. We will investigate the characteristics of Japanese-accented English and discuss the reason that such characteristics are observed. In the second half of the semester, we will focus on the relationship between English sounds and spelling. The topics to be discussed include non-standard spelling in computer-mediated communication, and phonics rules and instruction.
