The purpose of this course is to enable students to understand how to apply various analytical methods used in sociolinguistic studies (from Pragmatics to Discourse Analysis and beyond) to everyday discourse and to acquire how to critically observe language use in various social contexts.
授業概要
Through studying practical applications of discourse analysis to real-life situations, this course aims at understanding how language plays a crucial role in various social contexts. Students will be encouraged to choose their own topic, collect their own data, analyze them critically, and discuss their findings in class. In addition, students will be prepared to develop their research topic in their graduation theses.
