Introduction to etymology and its practical application in language study, literature and other fields.
授業概要
In this course we shall trace the historical development of etymology from its origins in Greece through its height in historical linguistics to its decline with the advent of stucturalism. The reawakening of interest in postmodern times will be discussed.

１．Introduction to the field of etymology. ２．Brief history of etymology. ３．Greek etymology as seen in Plato's "Cratylus". ４．Origin of words in nature - onomatopoeia. ５．Orgigin of words by convention. ６．Etymologies in the Bible and Christian tradition. ７．Leibnitz and etymology. ８．Linguistic reconstruction. ９．The concept of a proto-language. 10．The discovery of Indo-European. 11．The Romantic movement and etymology. 12．The Neo-grammarian movement, 13．The concept of etymology of Nietzsche. 14．The concept of etymology and truth in Heidegger. 15．Revision and questions.
