Madness is one aspect of the American Gothic which still interests American writers. It was an important element in creating the American imagination. We will read Poe, James and Nabokov in order to see how the theme of madness developed in American literature and how each writer reflects the transitions in the American imagination.
授業概要
Lectures on the theme of the course will be given at the beginning of class including the social and biographical background of each writer. Each student will read the work before the lecture and give a presentation on the assigned pages. Questions and class discussions will follow. A reading test will be given at the start of studying each work to check on how well you have read it. The final exam will be an essay exam.

Research on the criticism and information on the work before giving your presentation. Participate actively in the discussions. Read carefully in the English text. The class will be conducted in English as much as possible.
評価方法
Evaluation will be based on the essay exam, presentation, active class discussion and reading tests.
