We will read, analyze and interpret American short stories to learn their values and limitations, the secret of success or failure. A selection from the most interesting stories in the 19th century will be read and studied in order to compare the techniques, themes, social and ideological context, and artistic value. Stories not in the textbook will also be studied in handouts.
課題・評価
There will be a test on each reading. Writing one paper of analysis and interpretation will be required. The final exam will test knowledge of literary terms and an ability to analyze and interpret the short stories we have read.

Read each assigned work in English on time. Participate in class and speak as much as possible in English. Paragraph writing form will be required in writing the final exam.
授業計画
Literary terms will be explained as needed while we discuss the work. There will also be short lectures on the historical background when necessary. Short lectures on literary terms and analysis will precede the discussions. Speaking in English will be expected.
