American fiction depicts characters in search of freedom. What are they trying to be free from? American writers seem obsessed with constraints which tell us a great deal about their history and culture. We will place each character in his/her social context and see how the meaning of freedom developed during the 19th century.
課題・評価
Lectures will be in English. A short test will be given on each reading assignment. Participation in discussions in class will be a part of the evaluation. The final exam will consist of one essay question to be written in paragraph writing form in English.
