A close reading of A Pale View of Hills (1982) by Kazuo Ishiguro, who was born in Nagasaki in 1954 and left Japan in 1960 with his family to move to Surrey, England. In his first novel, Ishiguro depicts Etsuko, a Japanese woman living alone in England, and her memories of Nagasaki during the American occupation after the war. The theme of mother-daughter relationship will again be the focus of this semester.
