授業概要 |
This is a required course for all first-year students designed to help them improve the four basic skills in English--speaking, listening, writing, and reading. Students are divided into approximately thirty per class according to levels. Class is conducted in English. One important communication goal of this course is for students to speak in English about both familiar topics and various social and global issues. Self-study in the Media Center is also obligatory. |

Reading, preparation for discussion, composition are assigned in each class. Evaluation is based on attendance, classwork, quizzes, examination, Media Center attendance and the General Test. |

授業計画 |
1.Chapters of the main text are studied in detail. Students are expected to read and comprehend reading passages, do exercises, and state their opinions. Several chapters are covered in a semester, but the number of chapters will depend on the level of the group. 2.The subject of each chapter will be studied for deeper understanding of the subject and for further training of the four basic skills. 3.Discussions on the subject of each chapter is conducted. Students must take active participation, and exchange ideas with each other spontaneously in order to improve their fluency. 4.Speeches and presentations are assigned to train students to speak logically, and to improve their pronunciation and intonation. 5.Dictation, vocabulary tests, quizzes are given often. 6.Paragraph writing is taught in detail, focusing on logical development of a topic as well as grammatical correctness. Students are guided to be able to write acceptable paragraph(s) by the end of their first year. 7.Short stories are sometimes read and discussed with an introductory lecture on how to read a short story. 8.The General Test, which checks students' improvement in listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and writing, will be given in the second semester. |
